"Chihayafuru", a smash hit comic series that has sold more than 8.5 million copies (as of November 2012), depicts the fervent and passionate days of high school boys and girls who become absorbed in a Japanese traditional card game called "karuta competition". The first comic-based anime series of "Chihayafuru", which Nippon Television broadcasted in 2011, touched the hearts of many viewers both in Japan and abroad with its exciting karuta matches and heartwarming scenes of youngsters creating friendships.
Chihaya Ayase and her fellow karuta club members are now sophomores in the second anime series, which will broadcast beginning January 2013. They try to recruit freshmen to join their club and while many come to see them, almost everyone leaves the room after realizing how tough the game is. In the end, only two stay behind - Akihiro Tsukuba, a self-confident boy, and Sumire Hanano, a dreamy girl who has fallen in love with Taichi Mashima at first sight. With these two newcomers under her wing, Chihaya continues her quest to win against her rival high schools. Follow the members of Mizusawa High School's karuta club as they encourage each other by igniting their passion for this traditional karuta competition and grow up with every step along the way.
