In the rain forest of Barra Colorado island, a world famous nature-preserve in the Panama Canal, live two very different kinds of ants: vicious hunters called army ants, and peaceful mushroom farmers called leaf-cutter ants. The nomadic army ants trek the forests in huge swarms, occupying temporary bivouacs rather than building real nests. And in notoriously ferocious and strictly disciplined hunting raids, these ants attack and kill any insect that is unlucky enough to get in their way. Leaf-cutter ants, on the other hand, are very peaceful vegetarians. Swarms march quietly through the forest to cut and carry back leaves as fertilizer for the mushrooms they cultivate deep in underground nests. The program is a ultra-zoom-in look at the fascinating and complex societies of these two inhabitants of the forest floo . The program also reports on the dedicated efforts of the scientists who live on the island to protect animals and the rain forests in which they live.
