If Enka songs are bittersweet, melancholic ballads sung of the Japanese heart and soul, then Himawari Ohkouuchi (Yuki Amami), the heroine of "Queen of Enka," seems to live out the very spirit of Enka songs in her life. A struggling middle-aged Enka singer, Himawari, leads the saddest life imaginable for loving the most unreliable, selfish man in all of Japan, Hitoshi Tamaru (Taizo Harada). One day, Hitoshi shows up and convinces her that they should together put out another batch of CD's of her single hit song, "Onna No Wakaremichi (Going Separate Ways)," to create a bigger hit. Thus, Himawari goes to great lengths to gather up the money needed, but Hitoshi gives the money away to a friend. Himawari seems unlucky in all that she does, and yet she is a super heroine in her own right, meeting the challenges of her eventful life with zeal, sincerity and tenacity. This is a hysterical and melodramatic drama series that captures the truths and beauty of life.
