Smack in the middle of Tokyo can be found a rather unexpected sight - a colony of nearly 1000 Great Cormorants who live year-round in the pond of a large park. In spite of never-ending urban expansion and unpredictably harsh weather, these wild birds have adapted and even prospered. For Tokyoites they serve as a barometer of sorts - a measure of the city's ability to maintain both economic growth as well as wildlife inhabitability. In spite of their enviable central locale, Tokyo's winged residents do have to commute for food - sometimes up to 60 kilometers. And while instinct may not explain their original move to the metropolis, it does serve them well in their feeding, breeding, and rearing habits. We tag along with a cormorant community, through the four seasons, for a revealing look at how their lives are affected by a mos t unconventional living environment.
