24-Hour Television "Arakawa Clean-Aid Action 2010"270 Volunteers Clear Away 251 Bags of Garbage and Receive a Natural Environment Lesson with Arakawa River as Their Classroom

The 24-Hour Television Charity Committee and Arakawa Clean-Aid Forum co-hosted a natural environment lesson and cleanup activity along the Arakawa River in Edogawa Ward on May 29 (Saturday), 2010.

A total of 270 volunteers and staff participated in gathering plastic refuse and other garbage which filled up 251 bags. Upon completion of the cleaning, a hands-on natural environment lesson was held to explain about the fish in Arakawa River as well as the plants, insects and birds around that area. Participants also learned about conserving tidal wetland and reeds, and how to restore the environment for living creatures around Arakawa. Comments by participants included: "This is the first time that I volunteered for a cleanup. Inspired by this opportunity, I'd like to try to reduce my daily garbage." (female in her 20s) and "I participated because I wanted my elementary school-age sons to experience a cleanup. I think that by picking up garbage, they will make a connection to nature, which will lead to a greater cognizance of proper garbage disposal." (father in his 30s with two children)

"24-Hour Television" commenced the "Cleanup Japan Project" in 2004 to support environmental preservation. Twenty-one NTV network stations conducted cleanup activities of 23 areas in 2009, hoping to raise awareness about illegal waste-dumping, conservation of biodiversity and the global environment. The hope is that as the media reports on these activities, awareness will be heightened.

In addition to the 2010 eco campaign, "MAKE THE FUTURE: Learn, Protect, Create," in the NTV area, cleanup activities have taken and will take place as follows:
