Mr. Kihara and Sorajiro Represent Japan in UN WMO Video Campaign!

Nippon Television Network Corporation (Nippon TV) is proud to represent Japan and participate in the meteorologists' video campaign organized by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) of the United Nations (UN). This year's video campaign is the fourth of its kind and aims to spread awareness on the various effects of climate change, such as global warming.

The theme for this year is "Summer in the City" and features 13 weather-related media organizations from 12 countries. Meteorologists from the participating countries produced videos explaining what the temperatures in their respective cities will be like in the year 2100.

Nippon TV had the honor of participating for the first time in 2015, when the theme was "Weather 2050." This year, Nippon TV joins for the second time as the only media company representing Japan.

The video features "news every." meteorologist Mr. Minoru Kihara and Nippon TV's much-loved weather character Sorajiro, who debuted 10 years ago and is celebrating a decade on the air. "What will summer temperatures in Tokyo be like in 2100?" "What will happen to Japan's four seasons?" These are some of the questions they address as they forecast the effects of global warming. Moreover, they highlight several initiatives being taken domestically to stop climate change.

Ms. Kaoru Nemoto, Director of the United Nations Information Centre, and Nippon TV's very own Mr. Minoru Kihara share their comments on the campaign.

■Ms. Kaoru Nemoto, Director of the United Nations Information Centre
At this rate, by 2100, Tokyo's summer temperatures will rise to the heat levels currently seen in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. We may no longer be able to enjoy the beauty of Mt. Fuji's snow cap and the cherry blossoms in spring. Mr. Kihara, Sorajiro, and Nippon TV contributed significantly to the campaign by explaining complicated meteorological science in a way that is easy for viewers to understand. I am deeply grateful for their participation in the UN meteorologists' video campaign. The media plays an indispensable role in arousing people's interest and getting them to think of what they can do to help protect our beautiful planet. I hope that Mr. Kihara, Sorajiro, and Nippon TV will continue to inform the public about climate change.

■Mr. Minoru Kihara, Meteorologist
This year's Hurricane Harvey gained strength from the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and inflicted enormous damage to Texas. Global warming raises water temperatures as well and if we allow it to worsen, we will see an increase in natural disasters and risk destroying our beautiful Earth. It is necessary for all countries to immediately take the actions called for in the Paris Agreement.

Nippon TV's video, along with the videos from all participating countries, can be viewed on the WMO website (https://public.wmo.int/en). Nippon TV also aired its video on "Oha!4" on September 18th and "news every." the following day.
