Shibuya to ban nighttime street drinking around station

Tokyo's Shibuya Ward will prohibit nighttime street drinking around Shibuya Station starting from October 1. The no-drinking hours are from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning.

Shibuya Crossing, a popular tourist attraction in front of Shibuya Station, attracts hundreds of visitors every day.

Nighttime street drinking around the station had only been prohibited during Halloween and New Year Eve countdown periods, based on an ordinance enacted in 2019.

However, the ordinance was revised due to an increasing number of street-drinkers and worsening littering issues.

The restricted area will also be expanded and include places such as the vicinity of Shibuya Ward Office and Shibuya Hikarie.

No penalties will be imposed for violations.
