Japan to form public-private task force to address jet fuel shortage

The Japanese government is planning to establish a joint public-private task force to address the jet fuel shortage at domestic airports.

The shortages are causing disruptions to the increasing number of international flights flying to and from Japan.

Shortages at regional airports are being caused by the lack of transport ships and personnel needed to deliver fuel from refineries to where it’s needed.

Not being able to secure fuel is making it difficult to increase the number of flights and hampering the introduction of new routes by airlines from outside of Japan.

This is raising concerns that the shortages could dampen the strong inbound travel demand.

In response to these issues, interviews with relevant parties have revealed that the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, along with airlines and oil suppliers, will establish a joint public-private task force by mid-June.

The task force plans to develop measures in preparation for the anticipated increase in inbound travel during the summer.
