Emperor and family watch Imperial Guard's New Year review ceremony

Emperor Naruhito, Empress Masako and their daughter Princess Aiko watched the Imperial Guard's New Year review ceremony at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo on January 24.

About 260 police officers belonging to 10 units of the Imperial Guard Headquarters marched in sidecars, with police dogs and on guard horses at the palace's East Gardens.

This was the first time for Aiko to take part in the annual ceremony.

Naoe Toshikatsu, chief of the Imperial Guard Headquarters, pledged that all members will work together to move forward in the noble mission of protecting the imperial family.

Last year's event was cancelled due to the Noto Peninsula earthquake that occurred on New Year's Day.
