Empress Emerita Michiko undergoes leg surgery
Empress Emerita Michiko underwent surgery at the University of Tokyo Hospital on October 8.
The retired empress was taken to the hospital after falling at her residence. She was diagnosed with a fracture of the upper right femur on October 7.
The fracture was treated by joining the bone fragments using metal screws and plates.
The operation was finished by 7:30 AM local time on October 8.
Emperor Emeritus Akihito reportedly seemed to be relieved hearing that the surgery was successful.
This is the first time Empress Emerita Michiko has been hospitalized since she underwent surgery for breast cancer in 2019.
Empress Emerita Michiko is scheduled to remain in hospital for one to two weeks.
