Waymo to experiment autonomous taxis in Tokyo

Waymo, formerly Google’s self-driving car project, announced that it will start test-driving its autonomous taxis in Tokyo.

The autonomous driving technology company currently operates its self-driving taxis in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Phoenix in the United States.

Waymo and Japanese taxi company giant Nihon Kotsu announced on December 16 that it would partner up to test-drive Waymo’s autonomous taxis in Tokyo.

The companies will start with collecting data, where Nihon Kotsu drivers will drive 25 Waymo vehicles on public roads in central Tokyo.

Japan will be the first overseas market for Waymo.
