Nuclear power plant hit by 2011 quake in northeastern Japan to restart
Tohoku Electric Power is scheduled to restart the unit 2 reactor at the Onagawa nuclear power plant in Miyagi Prefecture, northeastern Japan, between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on October 29.
The company will confirm its criticality by pulling out each control rod inserted between the nuclear fuel in the reactor one by one to activate nuclear fission, allowing it to continue stably.
The Onagawa nuclear power plant, which was shut down due to the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, passed the examination based on the new regulatory standards in 2020.
Safety measure works such as raising the seawall and seismic reinforcement of the reactor building were completed by May of this year.
Once Onagawa's unit 2 reactor is operational, it will be the first reactor in the area severely damaged by the earthquake to be restarted.
Tohoku Electric plans to begin generating electricity early November, with full-scale electricity to be sent to each household around December.
