Chinas updated anti-espionage law allow investigation of personal devices
The Chinese government implemented the revised anti-espionage law last year.
Updates to China’s anti-espionage laws allow authorities to investigate electronic devices, such as smartphones and laptops, in emergency cases of suspected spy activity effective July 1.
Chinese officials said that civilians who have no connection to espionage activities are exempt from this law.
However, there are concerns about the vague definitions of espionage and forced inspection of personal devices upon entry into the country as well as information security concerns among business travelers.
National security continues to intensify under the Xi Jinping administration, impacting foreign companies operating in China as well.
