Crown Prince Fumihito, Crown Princess Kiko, Princess Kako, Emperor Emeritus Akihito, Empress Emerita Michiko, and Princess Hanako made an appearance as well.
S/ Emperor Naruhito/ Happy New Year. I am pleased to celebrate the New Year with everyone like this. On the other hand, I am concerned about the many people who are still living with hardships due to the Noto Peninsula earthquake that occurred on New Year’s Day last year and the heavy rainfalls that befell multiple regions. I believe there are many difficulties, but I am wishing for a peaceful and good year for everyone.
Last year’s greeting was cancelled in respect of the Noto Peninsula earthquake that occurred on New Year’s Day.
This year was the first time in 5 years since the spread of COVID-19 that prior reservation was not required.
14,613 people had queued by 9:30AM when gates were opened.
Around 60,000 people gathered this year for the 5 appearances the imperial family made for the New Year’s greeting.
