Tokyo marks 101st anniversary of Great Kanto Earthquake

A memorial service was held in Tokyo on September 1 to commemorate the victims of the Great Kanto Earthquake, 101 years after the disaster.

The earthquake claimed the lives of approximately 105,000 people due to the initial shaking and subsequent fires.

A grand memorial service was conducted at the Tokyo Metropolitan Memorial Hall on the 101st anniversary of the disaster.

The service is held annually in conjunction with a memorial for the victims of the Tokyo air raids by U.S. bombers during World War II.

Typically, bereaved families and representatives from local governments attend, but this year, due to poor weather conditions caused by Typhoon Shanshan, the event was significantly scaled down.

Only about 30 people, including members of the Tokyo Metropolitan Memorial Association and Buddhist monks, attended.

Meanwhile, at Yokoamicho Park in Sumida Ward, a separate ceremony was held to honor the Korean victims who were killed during the chaos following the earthquake due to false rumors.
