Hungary police apologize for dismissing threat complaints from murdered Japanese woman
An Irish man, the ex-husband of a Japanese woman who was found dead in January, has been arrested on suspicion of murder.
The victim’s lawyer said that the woman had consulted the police after receiving a letter from her Irish ex-husband in 2023 saying that she would “die in agony,” but they did not take action.
Victim’s lawyer / They didn’t take seriously any of her complaints, stating that this is not a crime in Hungary.
Mounting criticism of the police has led to protests in Hungary.
On February 11, the police apologized on their website saying that their response was inadequate, and announced that they had taken disciplinary action against six officers.
The police said it was a mistake that they had dismissed the victim’s complaint of threats from the ex-husband, and that they will re-examine cases involving domestic violence they have closed in the past year.
The police also said that it would increase the number of officers who will receive training on domestic violence moving forward.
