Imperial Palace holds nature walks
Lottery winners participated in a nature walk at Fukiage Gardens on Imperial Palace
grounds on May 4.
The nature walks began in 2007 with Emperor Emeritus Akihito and Empress Emerita
Michiko’s desire to share the natural environment on palace grounds with the public.
The tradition of nature walks began in 2007, driven by then Emperor Akihito and
Empress Michiko’s wish to open the palace grounds to share the natural environment
with the public.
The Fukiage Gardens is home to a variety of rare and vulnerable plant species.
The nature walks are held in April and May each year.
The May nature walk is held on Greenery Day, a Japanese public holiday that shows
appreciation for nature.
Experts led 3 one and a half hour walks for 95 participants throughout the day.
S/ Child participant/ There were a lot of birds, and it was nice to hear them chirping. I
thought it was a valuable environment. It was nice to observe a variety of nature.
S/ Adult participant/ It felt refreshing to be among the trees and waterfalls. It was a
pleasant tour.
