New PM Ishiba gives policy speech in parliament
Japan’s new prime minister Ishiba Shigeru gave his first policy speech in parliament on October 4.
S/ Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru/ We cannot expect citizens to believe in a government that does not believe in its citizens. By realizing a government that speaks the truth with courage and sincerity and gaining the understanding and empathy of its citizens, we can be resolute in regaining trust in the government, building Japan’s future, and protecting Japan’s future.
Ishiba’s opening statement touched on recovering trust in government in addition to his commitment to increasing wages that will overcome the rising cost of goods.
The prime minister said that he is determined to raise Japan’s average minimum wage to 1,500 yen by 2030.
Ishiba aims to double regional revitalization subsidies in the initial budget.
He did not mention establishing the Asian version of NATO or the revision of the U.S.-Japan Status of Forces Agreement that was part of his campaigning.
The prime minister expressed establishing understanding within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and thoroughly discussing each item on the agenda.
