Princess Kako cheers on local train during visit to Fukushima

Princess Kako, daughter of Crown Prince Akishino, made a visit to Fukushima Prefecture starting August 10.

The princess visited Aizu Wakamatsu Castle on the morning of August 11 before heading to a viewpoint to look over the JR Tadami Line which connects Aizu Wakamatsu to Niigata Prefecture.

Heavy rainfall in July 2011 caused extensive damage to the train line, which closed a section for 11 years afterwards.

The closed portion of the train line had difficulties being restored due to it being in the red. The complete train line returned to service after locals strongly called for its restoration.

Princess Kako waved a flag a local student made as part of the effort revitalizing the Tadami Line.

She said she can understand wanting to see this moment.
