My Neighbour Totoro stage adaptation begins West End run

The stage adaptation of the Studio Ghibli film “My Neighbour Totoro” began its West End run at the Gillian Lynne Theatre in London on March 20.

The production, which premiered in 2022, had two previous sold-out runs in the UK before it began this long-run engagement.

Conceived and executive produced by Joe Hisaishi, the original composer for the film, the show is co-produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company and Nippon TV.

To date, over 290,000 people have seen the stage adaptation, and it won 6 Olivier Awards in 2023 for categories such as “Best Director” and “Best Entertainment or Comedy Play”

The two actresses that play the main characters of Satsuki and Mei shared with us their feelings on the production:

Victoria Chen, Mei: I’m so lucky to get to be a part of this production; to be representing Studio Ghibli.

Ami Okumura Jones, Satsuki: So you get a much closer relationship with the band and the live music in this version. I certainly hope that it will run for a long long long time.

Tickets for “My Neighbour Totoro” are on sale now, with performances until March 29, 2026 currently available.
