Top JMSDF officer hints at resignation over inappropriate operations

Interviews of Ministry of Defense officials by Nippon TV have found that classified information was being handled by unqualified personnel on many Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force vessels.

The investigation into the matter came to light following a similar incident involving the destroyer Inazuma, which received disciplinary action in April 2024.

No information leaks outside the JMSDF have been confirmed, but the ministry is considering disciplinary action against former ship commanders and staff officers in charge at the time.

The investigation results and details of disciplinary actions are expected to be announced later in July.

It is reported that Chief of Staff for the Maritime Staff Office Sakai Ryo is indicating his intention to resign in response to these issues.
