Environmentally friendly travel program GREEN JOURNEY launches in Japan
Japanese car manufacturers, travel agencies, and railway companies announced the launch of a new initiative travel program on August 20.
Called GREEN JOURNEY, this travel product focuses on environmentally friendly travel methods and accommodation.
With the travel and tourism industry said to be responsible for more than 10% of global CO2 emissions, the initiative was launched across industry boundaries.
The first two tours will be in Aso, Kumamoto Prefecture, and the Ise-Shima area in Mie Prefecture, and will reduce CO2 emissions by more than 20% compared to regular tours.
The tours will use electric cars and motorbikes for transport and use recycled materials for amenities at the hotels in order to achieve the 20% reduction.
14 companies and others are already signed on to the initiative, and GREEN JOURNEY aims to expand to 200 areas across Japan by 2033.
