Megaquake warning affects railways
Some transportation systems, including the Shinkansen bullet trains, have been affected due to the announcement of an alert warning for a possible massive earthquake involving the Nankai Trough Earthquake advisory on August 8.
Central Japan Railway said the Tokaido Shinkansen will be operated with the maximum speed reduced from 285 kilometers per hour to 230 kilometers per hour between Mishima and Mikawa-Anjo stations for about a week going forward.
Bullet trains traveling between the two stations are expected to be late by at least 10 minutes or so.
JR Central is offering refunds on fares and fees without charging a cancellation fee for those who cancel their trips due to the emergency information.
JR East is also operating some sections of the Tokaido Line and Chuo Line at reduced speeds, and delays or cancellations may occur.
On the other hand, there has been little impact on air travel.
On the morning of August 9, at Haneda Airport in Tokyo, there were passengers heading to Miyazaki in southwestern Japan.
S/ Passenger returning to Miyazaki: Since they say that there should be no problem as long as we take sufficient precaution in our daily lives, I’m thinking of enjoying travel or returning home while being careful.
S/ Passenger returning to Miyazaki: There were some concerns, but I decided to return while I still could.
