Black screen installed to block Mt. Fuji
A black screen was installed on the street in Fujikawaguchiko, Yamanashi Prefecture on May 21 to prevent nuisance behavior by tourists trying to take photos of Mt. Fuji.
The screen, which is 2.5 meters tall, completely blocks the view of Mt. Fuji from the street.
While it does block the view, the material of the screen allows wind to pass through and does allow for limited visibility of the street.
The sidewalk where the screen is installed was narrow, making it difficult for people to use while others were stopped to take pictures.
The road on the other side of the screen has a considerable amount of traffic on it.
With a station nearby, many vehicles like tour buses use this road all day, making it quite dangerous to cross suddenly.
While Mt. Fuji was hidden behind the clouds on May 21 when the screen was installed, normally you can clearly view the mountain perched above the convenience store.
It was this view of Mt. Fuji that many foreign tourists flocked to, and as a result, caused several problems for local residents leading to the installation of the screen.
Q: Has the screen been effective since it was installed?
While there aren’t that many people taking pictures of the scenery from the sidewalk, local residents did say that the number of people suddenly crossing the street has decreased considerably.
However, there is still a problem with littering in the area, as well as with tourists who rent bicycles and don’t follow local manners for being on the road.
