Maui wildfire recovery efforts continue one year on

A year ago, wildfires devastated the Hawaii island of Maui, causing 102 deaths.

Japanese media organizations got to see the hard-hit town of Lahaina on August 6.

S/ NNN correspondent / This is a main street of the town. The removal of debris is continuing. On the other side, a burned down building remains as is. These are banyan trees in a park that was one of the area's attractions, but the trees have also burned. Over there is a building that used to be a courthouse.

The area where hotels used to stand is still closed off.

Officials say debris removal will continue until February next year.

S/ John Smith, Maui County / I'm happy to report all drinking water in Lahaina is clean. All drinking water is usable.

As many people in the area are still in need of places to stay, construction of temporary housing is underway at a rapid pace.

The Maui wildfires that broke out on August 8, 2023, are considered the worst natural disaster ever in Hawaii.
