BOJ chief says additional rate hikes will be determined carefully
Bank of Japan Governor Ueda Kazuo reiterated that any decision to additionally raise interest rates will be made after careful examination.
S/ Ueda Kazuo, Governor, Bank of Japan / In terms of policy decision, we need to carefully check the domestic and overseas financial markets and the overseas economic situation behind them, and I think we can afford the time for this.
Ueda made the remarks in his meeting with the Kansai business community in Osaka on September 24.
The central bank chief noted that risks for the Japanese economy include trends in the U.S. economy and outlooks on personal consumption.
He emphasized the importance of continuing wage increases to boost consumption.
Ueda also said the BOJ plans to release the outcome of its Review of Monetary Policy from a Broad Perspective by the end of this year.
At his press conference in Osaka, a reporter asked how the BOJ will treat its 2013 joint statement with the Japanese government that sets the price stability target at 2 percent as the country will have a new leader shortly.
Ueda declined to comment on the matter at this time, saying only that the central bank will handle the matter in close communication with the government.
