China mulls restoring short-stay visa exemptions for Japanese visitors

The Chinese government is considering the resumption of short-stay visa exemptions for Japanese visitors by the end of November.

According to executives of a Chinese state-run travel agency, the Chinese government has informed them of such plans.

Short-stay visa exemptions for Japanese nationals have been suspended since the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Japanese government and economic organizations have repeatedly requested that the exemption be restored, but China has stalled on the measure.

The Chinese side has been demanding similar measures for Chinese visitors to Japan, but there isn’t any prospect for the resumption of such measures.

While China's economy continues to be in a slump, expectations are rising for increased investment by foreign companies, and the resumption of exemptions could lead to a recovery in business traffic between Japan and China.
