Tokyo to subsidize up to 3 million yen per year for study abroad
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is considering offering stipends of up to 3.15 million yen per year to Tokyoites studying abroad.
The Japanese capital is considering subsidizing up to 900,000 yen for travel and tuition for short-term study abroad.
For longer periods, Tokyo is planning to provide up to 3.15 million yen for a year of study abroad, including travel, tuition, and local activity expenses.
One condition for applicants is that their guardian must be a Tokyo resident, and there is no income cap.
The local government said it will support 500 students per year for short-term programs, and 100 students annually for medium- to long-term programs.
Tokyo Governor Koike Yuriko emphasized the importance of investing in the young people so they can play an active role in the world.
Tokyo has allocated 100 million yen in the budget draft for fiscal year 2025.
