Amazon Japan probed over alleged antitrust law violations

According to sources, the Japan Fair Trade Commission has conducted an on-site inspection of Amazon Japan over its alleged antitrust law violations.

On Amazon Japan’s website, when the same product is listed by multiple vendors, only one product is prominently recommended on the purchase page.

The online giant retailer is suspected of demanding that sellers who want to be featured offer a lower selling price than other sites or use Amazon's shipping or payment services.

The Fair Trade Commission, suspecting that these demanding actions constitute abuse of a superior bargaining position under Japan’s antitrust law, (the Antimonopoly Act) will proceed with its analysis of the data and will request information from a wide range of sellers.

Amazon Japan said it will cooperate fully with the commission's investigation.
