Starbucks Coffee Japan to switch to biomass plastic straws

Starbucks Coffee Japan will start switching from paper straws to straws made from biomass plastic at its locations nationwide.

Starbucks had stopped using straws derived from fossil fuels and switched to paper straws in 2020 due to environmental concerns.

Starbucks Customer: After a while, the paper straws get soft and wet, and they don’t hold their shape...

After receiving complaints from customers about the quality of the straws, Starbucks decided to switch to biomass plastic straws, which have a lower carbon footprint.

The amount of straw waste is also expected to be reduced by almost half.

The switchover will gradually take place in all shops nationwide over the next month or so, starting on March 24.
