Quake-hit temple holds event for first time in 2 years

Quake-hit temple in Noto Peninsula central Japan held an event commemorating the passing of the Buddha for the first time in two years on February 15.

Shokoji Temple’s main hall was devastated by the earthquake on New Year’s Day 2024.

However, the temple was able to hold the event safely in a remaining building where around 50 locals attempted to catch rice cakes.

The rice cakes are made in the shape of the 12 zodiac animals that are said to have mourned the loss of the Buddha.

This year, the temple prepared around 800 rice cakes in the shape of dogs, birds, and snakes.

The event is said to bring health and safety to the region.
