Ishiba Shigeru elected as Prime Minister
Nukaga Fukushiro, Speaker of House of Representatives: Ishiba Shigeru has been designated as Prime Minister in this chamber.
This House of Representatives plenary session began 25 minutes later than originally scheduled due to resistance from opposition parties.
The reason for the hostility was that before Ishiba was appointed Prime Minister, he said that he planned to proceed with a general election on October 27.
The opposition parties argued that sufficient debate in the budget committee was necessary before dissolution of the lower chamber, and strongly opposed the short duration of the extraordinary Diet session.
As a result, the plenary session to appoint the new Prime Minister began in turmoil,
with the opposition delivering speeches in protest.
Noda Yoshihiko, leader of main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party:
Ishiba said that the LDP follows the rules, yet he fails to follow through on what he has said. I thought he was the kind of politician who would face debates head-on, but instead, he quickly runs away. This is deeply disappointing.
Prime Minister Ishiba is set to form a coalition between the LDP and its often partner party the Komeito.
He is scheduled to establish a Cabinet formation office with senior members of Komeito.
The new cabinet members are expected to be called to the Prime Minister’s Office today, before Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi Yoshimasa announces the official list of ministers late this afternoon.
Following the certification ceremony at the Imperial Palace, the first Ishiba Cabinet is expected to be officially launched on the evening of October 1.
