TEPCO resumes test removal of fuel debris from Fukushima Daiichi's unit 2 reactor

Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) announced on October 28 that the suspended test removal of melted fuel debris in the damaged second reactor of Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant resumed.

TEPCO began the removal of fuel debris from the plant's unit 2 reactor last month, but two cameras attached to the equipment failed to capture images of the debris.

The work was suspended for over a month to investigate the cause and replace the cameras, but at 9:08 a.m. on the 28th, TEPCO opened the valve leading to the containment vessel and resumed the removal work.

During the work, two of the five pipes that push the device into the containment vessel were connected, and the tip of the device was advanced 6.5 meters into the containment vessel where the fuel debris is located.

It is expected to take about two weeks to recover the fuel debris.
