Divers rescued from stranded boat off Okinawa's Kerama islands

The Japan Coast Guard rescued divers from a stranded boat off Okinawa's Kerama islands in southwestern Japan.

Coast guard officials said the captain of the diving boat notified them shortly after 11 a.m. on December 26 that the vessel ran aground in shallow water near an uninhabited island.

By 2 p.m., seven of the 24 crew members and passengers, including two children, were hoisted up onto a helicopter.

As poor weather conditions prevented coast guard members from continuing the hoist rescue procedure, they boarded the boat and guided the remaining 17 people along rocks to the uninhabited island.

From there, they were transported using helicopters of both the coast guard and the Air Self-Defense Force by 6 p.m.

There were no reports of injuries among the people rescued.
