Nissan tests driverless car on public roads in Japan

Nissan has unveiled a public experiment in Yokohama using an autonomous vehicle that drives through urban areas with no one in the driver's seat.

Level 4 vehicles, the second-highest in autonomous driving, can operate without a human driver.

The focus is whether the vehicle can run smoothly on the busy streets of Yokohama.

The AI was able to run along a 4km route, including stopping and starting with sufficient consideration for passersby at pedestrian crossings.

S/ Doi Kazuhiro, Nissan Managing Director: Next, we would like to achieve a mobility system that can be used every day in Yokohama, with around 20 vehicles.”

Nissan plans to run multiple autonomous vehicles in Yokohama as part of a demonstration experiment involving the public from September 2025.

The company aims to complete a system capable of Level 4 autonomous driving by fiscal 2027.
