Nihon Hidankyo reiterates call for a nuclear-free world
S/ Tanaka Terumi, (92) co-chair of Nihon Hidankyo in Nagasaki:
I thought that the chair of the Nobel Peace Prize Committee must have recognized the need to turn the appeals made by the atomic bomb survivors into a shared understanding among people worldwide, and to globalize the movement for nuclear abolition. I hope this will increasingly become a powerful force for eliminating nuclear weapons.
S/ Tanaka Shigemitsu, (83), co-chair of Nihon Hidankyo in Nagasaki: I think yesterday was the best day of my life. I am grateful to our seniors, and I think that we, who have inherited their work, have truly been on a wonderful path.
The activities of the Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations, also known as Nihon Hidankyo in Japan, have been suspended or dissolved in 11 prefectures. How to maintain its activities remains a question.
At the press conference, its members emphasized that the need to eliminate nuclear weapons is not an issue for the Hibakusha, but for mankind, and that the survivors must properly tell young people about nuclear weapons and their past activities.
