Nobel Peace Prize laureates and Norwegian PM call for world without nuclear weapons
Three co-chairpersons from Nihon Hidankyo met with Norway's Prime Minister, Jonas Gahr Støre, in Oslo on December 11, a day after receiving the Nobel Peace Prize.
At a press conference after the meeting, Prime Minister Store said that “it is necessary to create a world without nuclear weapons” and expressed his determination to accelerate efforts towards the abolition of nuclear weapons.
In response, Tanaka Terumi, a co-chair of Nihon Hidankyo, called on the Japanese government to take the lead in international public opinion towards abolition as the only country to have suffered nuclear bombs in war.
S/ Tanaka Terumi, Nihon Hidankyo Co-chair: We would like to request that the government demonstrate leadership in the area of eliminating nuclear weapons.
On that basis, he once again called on the Japanese government to participate in the Nuclear Weapons Convention, which bans the use of nuclear weapons.
Furthermore, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate hibakusha visited a high school in Oslo and gave testimony about their experiences of the atomic bombings.
They called for attention to the issue of nuclear weapons by saying, “Nuclear weapons are not needed in this world. Please raise your voices.”
They are scheduled to return to Japan on December 12 after completing a series of events related to the award.
