Joint Operations Command set up at Japan's Defense Ministry

 

The Joint Operations Command, which provides unified command of the Ground, Maritime, and Air Self-Defense Forces, was established on March 24. 

The new command is based at the Ministry of Defense in Ichigaya, Tokyo, and has been established with a staff of around 240 personnel.  

Air Self-Defense Force General Nagumo Kenichiro holds its top position.  

The Chief of Staff of the Joint Staff, who previously commanded the Self-Defense Forces will now focus on assisting the Minister of Defense.  

In addition, the Joint Operations Commander will also be responsible for liaising with the US military.  

According to the Ministry of Defense, the aim is to be able to respond flexibly and quickly to deploy troops and to strengthen cooperation with the US military.
