Magnitude 6.6 earthquake triggers tsunami in southwest Japan
A magnitude 6.6 earthquake that occurred off the coast of Miyazaki Prefecture at 9:19PM local time triggered a tsunami advisory in southwestern Japan on January 13.
Tsunami of up to 20 centimeters was observed in Miyazaki Prefecture.
The Japan Meteorological Agency held a meeting of experts to analyze the temblor’s relevance to the Nankai Trough Earthquake, and concluded that the quake did not increase the possibility of the occurrence of the Nankai Trough megaquake.
A megaquake warning is issued only when the magnitude reaches 7.0, but officials said the earthquake on January 13 did not reach that standard.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said that the scale of the quake was about a third of the benchmark; but called on people to be prepared for any earthquakes.
