Japan compiles strategy to accelerate development of software-defined vehicles

The Japanese government compiled a new strategy on May 20 to accelerate the development of next-generation software-defined vehicles, also known as SDV’s.

The move comes as competition to develop next-generation automobiles is intensifying, primarily among emerging manufacturers in the United States and China.

The strategic plan calls for the establishment of a new community by this fall to facilitate information sharing and other activities among companies.

Japanese officials hope to promote collaboration among manufacturers, particularly in software development, which is currently being done individually by each manufacturer.

Unlike the current generation of vehicles that mostly relied on the strength of their hardware, SDVs can have their performance updated through software updates.

The government and private sector will accelerate the development of the SDVs, with an aim to acquire 30 percent global share for Japanese manufacturers by 2030.
