Islands south of Tokyo hit by small tsunamis
Japan’s Izu Islands south of Tokyo were hit by small tsunamis on September 24.
Tsunami advisories were issued for the Izu and Ogasawara Islands following a magnitude 5.9 earthquake off the Tori-shima Island around 8:14AM local time.
The Japan Meteorological Agency warned that a tsunami of up to one meter is expected in coastal areas.
The agency said that the mechanism of the quake is yet unknown, but said that about 1,800 meters worth of sea surface discoloration was observed on September 19, around Sumisujima island (or Smith Rocks), an undersea volcano near the epicenter of the quake.
No damage has been reported from the tsunamis.
Weather officials have called on people to stay away from coastal areas and the sea as tsunamis bigger than the first ones could be experienced.
