Kishida to hand over LDP discussions on constitutional revision to successor

S/ Kishida Fumio, Prime Minister / It is important for discussions over constitutional revision to be thorough. To make sure this idea is handed over to the new party president who will be elected soon, I will firmly make note of it. I also think I must make efforts toward further discussions on the matter.

Prime Minister Kishida Fumio made the remarks at a meeting of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party's Headquarters for the Realization of Revision of the Constitution.

The group met at the party head office in Tokyo on September 2.

Its members compiled major topics involving amending Japan's Constitution, including spelling out the existence to the Self-Defense Forces in Article 9.

The Constitution's Article 9 renounces war and declares that Japan will not possess military forces and other "war potential."

Constitutional revision is a major issue in this month's LDP presidential election that will effectively decide who will be Japan's next prime minister.
