Opposition party needs 8 more votes to impeach South Korean President Yoon
The South Korean parliament is set to vote on whether to impeach the country’s president Yoon Suk Yeol on December 7.
South Korea woke up to political unrest on December 4 after Yoon’s surprise attempt to impose a martial law. Lawmakers gathered at midnight to vote it down and reverse the decision just six hours later.
Opposition lawmakers need eight more votes for the impeachment bill to pass, which will have to be from the ruling party.
The representative of South Korea’s ruling party said on December 5 that it will oppose the president’s impeachment, while it maintained that his unconstitutional announcement of the martial law was not defensible.
The representative of the biggest opposition party said that he was trying to persuade the ruling party and called on them to fulfill their historical responsibility.
