Kyoto to raise accommodation tax to 10,000yen per night

The city of Kyoto is considering raising the accommodation tax to a maximum 10,000 yen per night, according to sources.

The popular tourist destination currently requires visitors to pay a lodging tax ranging from 200 to 1,000 yen per person per night.

The city plans to charge 200 yen for rooms under 6,000 yen per night, 4,000 yen for rooms between 50,000 and 100,000 yen, and 10,000 yen for rooms 100,000 yen or more.

If realized, Kyoto will be gaining about 13 billion yen in tax revenue, more than double the current amount.

The new tax system is scheduled to take effect in March 2026.

Kyoto Mayor Matsui Koji said in December 2024 that billions of yen in revenue is necessary so that citizens can benefit from the high levels of tourism.
