Melania Trump posted a photo of Akie, Trump, and herself on her personal social media account on December 15.

The photo was captioned: It was a privilege to host Mrs. Akie Abe at Mar-a-Lago once again. We fondly remembered her late husband, former Prime Minister Abe, and honored his remarkable legacy.

According to CNN, Trump would regularly call and check in on Akie after her husband’s death.

The meeting was decided through direct communication between Trump and Akie rather than through government channels.
