A powerful typhoon is approaching Japan and on course to traverse the archipelago from the southwest to the northeast. Japanese authorities are urging people to monitor the latest information about Typhoon Shanshan,or so-called Typhoon No.10 in Japanese and prepare for the possibility of disasters such as flooding and landslides.

S/ Tachihara Shuichi, Chief Forecaster, Japan Meteorological Agency
There is a possibility that the typhoon might come near Japan with extremely strong power. Please heighten your sense of crisis and alertness over the typhoon.

Officials say the 10th storm of the season could bring violent winds and heavy rainfall on a wide range of areas across the country. They are warning that the effects might last for several days as the typhoon is moving slowly and that torrential rain might fall in regions far away from the center of the storm. The officials also said the forecast movement of the typhoon may change and urged people to evacuate before the rain and winds become heavy and strong.

In response, train operators are planning to suspend part of their services. Central Japan Railway announced that the Tokaido shinkansen bullet train line connects Tokyo and Shin-Osaka stations may be partially or completely stopped at some time periods between August 29 and 31. JR Central officials earlier said the storm could affect train services on August 27 and 28 but changed its plan as the latest forecasts showed there will be limited impact on these two days.

The forecast is from Japan Meteorological Agency data but situations change, so please do not forget to check the latest updates.
