EXCLUSIVE:Taiwan's official says "It will be difficult for Japan to lead" in the semiconductor race
The head of Taiwan's National Development Council, Chairman Liu Chin-Ching, answered in an exclusive interview with Nippon TV, and emphasized that Taiwan and Japan should leverage each other's strengths to complement each other in the semiconductor industry.
Liu, who is the chairman of National Development Council, which is equivalent to Taiwan's Cabinet Secretary, visited Japan and announced the establishment of a basecamp for Taiwanese startups to create business opportunities in fields such as AI through collaboration with Japanese companies.
Taiwan, which supports TSMC, the world's largest semiconductor foundry, recognizes that the situation for Japan to regain its former leadership in the semiconductor field is challenging.
Taiwan National Development Council
Chairman Liu Chin-Ching
I think it will be difficult for Japan to lead the world in semiconductors as it once did. The current state of the semiconductor industry is completely different. I believe Japan should cooperate with Taiwan. By leveraging each other's strengths, we can accelerate the semiconductor sector.
Chairman Liu emphasized that Japan's strengths lie in semiconductor materials and manufacturing equipment, which can complement Taiwan's strengths in design and manufacturing, creating mutual benefits.
To add, due to Taiwan’s more severe decline in the birthrate than Japan, Liu mentioned that Taiwan is not only welcoming foreign workers but also strengthening investments in the AI sector to reduce reliance on human labor.
