UN expresses "profound alarm" over ex-Johnny's sexual abuse response

A working group of the United Nation Human Rights Council expressed profound alarm on the former Johnny & Associates' response to its sexual abuse victims.

The Working Group on Business and Human Rights released a report on May 28, saying it remained "profoundly alarmed" by allegations of sexual exploitation by the agency's late founder Johnny Kitagawa.

It criticized Japanese media for "covering up such scandals for decades."

It acknowledged relief efforts to the victims offered by SMILE-UP., the successor company to Johnny's.

However, it said that it receives regular reports about the difficulties the victims face in seeking mental health care assistance through the company’s consultation desk.

The working group also stated that it is "unacceptable" that the victims had to bear legal costs themselves.
