Visitors to Hiroshima peace museum surpass 2 million for first time in FY2024
The number of visitors to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum that documents the 1945 atomic bombing of Hiroshima in western Japan surpassed 2 million for the first time in a fiscal year.
Museum officials said that as of February 15, the institution had 2,003,718 visitors during fiscal 2024 that runs through the end of March.
About 637,000, or more than 30 percent of the total, were foreign nationals.
The officials cited factors such as growth in the number of foreign tourists due to the weak yen as reasons for the increase in visitors.
They also noted that people nowadays seem to be more concerned about peace and security amid an unstable global situation.
Hiroshima also gained attention as the host city of the Group of Seven summit in 2023.
The officials said the cumulative total number of visitors since the museum opened in August 1955 is expected to top 80 million in mid-March.
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and 70 years since the opening of the museum.
