Special Bonsai pieces made at Imperial Palace ahead of New Year's

Workers at the Imperial Palace decorated trees on December 24.

The traditional Bonsai pieces, called Haru-kazari, will be placed in the palace to celebrate the New Year.

Trees such as pine, bamboo and plum, which are considered auspicious, were used in the works.

Some of the plum trees featured are over 150 years old.

A worker covered the soil with moss and spread white sand to resemble a river.

The Bonsai works will decorate the palace starting December 30.
